Piano Lesson 4 – Adding Left Hand (Harmony + Chords)

Awesome! You’re moving quickly 🎹
Let’s go to Lesson 4.

🎼 Piano Lesson 4 – Adding Left Hand (Harmony + Chords)

So far you learned:

  • Lesson 1 → Right hand (C–D–E–F–G exercise)
  • Lesson 2 → Left hand & hands together
  • Lesson 3 → First song (Mary Had a Little Lamb) with right hand

Now in Lesson 4, we’ll add the left hand to create harmony (chords) while the right hand plays the melody.

1. Left Hand Chords

We’ll use 3 main chords in C major:

  • C chord → C – E – G (fingers 5–3–1)
  • F chord → F – A – C (fingers 5–3–1)
  • G chord → G – B – D (fingers 5–3–1)

👉 Place your left hand little finger (5) on C (below Middle C), and use your hand to play these chords.

2. Simple Pattern

Instead of playing all notes together, start with blocked chords (play all at once):

  • When your right hand plays part of the melody,
  • Your left hand plays a chord once per measure (every 4 beats).

3. Example with “Mary Had a Little Lamb”

  • Play the melody in the right hand (like Lesson 3).
  • Add a C chord in the left hand at the beginning of each measure.

It will sound fuller, like real piano music. 🎶

4. Rhythm Practice

  • Count 1 – 2 – 3 – 4.
  • Right hand plays melody notes on each beat.
  • Left hand plays chord on beat 1 of each measure.

Practice Goal for Lesson 4

  • Play “Mary Had a Little Lamb” with C chord accompaniment in the left hand.
  • Once comfortable, experiment with switching between C chord and G chord.
